High concentration of PFAS detected in water samples from US military base in Greenland

According to CCTV News, on July 1st local time, it was learned that high concentrations of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were present in water samples near the US Pitufik Space Base in northwest Greenland, with perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) reaching a concentration of 1100 nanograms per liter. Danish scholars have stated that this level is about 250 times the EU limit.
It is reported that the Danish newspaper Politika found high levels of perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl pollutants in the vicinity of the Pitufik space base after reviewing water sample data published on the US defense department website. The environmental department of Greenland said that it did not know whether the Pitufik base had used perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances. However, considering that such substances had been used for fire foam in many countries, it was speculated that the base might also have used them.
In 2017, almost all military bases in the United States had replaced the fire foam containing perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances, but Pitufik was one of the few bases that had not been replaced. The US military has not yet responded on whether to replace it and the specific replacement time.
