Key materials in semiconductor manufacturing processes! 12000 tons/year semiconductor grade PFA project acceptance announcement
On October 8th, the Ecology and Environment Bureau of Zibo City accepted and published the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for the 12000 tons/year semiconductor grade meltable polytetrafluoroethylene (PFA) project of Shandong Dongyue Future Hydrogen Materials Co., Ltd. The relevant information of the project is as follows:
Project Name: 12000 tons/year Semiconductor Grade Meltable Polytetrafluoroethylene (PFA) Project
Construction unit: Shandong Dongyue Future Hydrogen Materials Co., Ltd
Project nature: Expansion
Construction location: Dongyue Fluorosilicon Materials Industrial Park, Huantai County, Zibo City
Main construction content: The new building area of this project is about 15000 square meters, mainly for the construction of semiconductor grade meltable polytetrafluoroethylene (PFA) production equipment and post-treatment equipment. After the project is completed, it will have an annual production capacity of 12000 tons of semiconductor grade meltable polytetrafluoroethylene (PFA).
Proposed completion date: August 2030
▶ About PFA
PFA is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and perfluoroalkyl vinyl ether (PPVE), and its physical, chemical, and electrical properties are similar to PTFE. However, PFA has a small amount of perfluoroalkoxy side chains, which improves viscosity and flowability, and can be melt processed. Therefore, PFA is called "meltable polytetrafluoroethylene".
Due to the presence of terminal unstable groups, ordinary PFA is limited in its applications in semiconductor and other fields. Ultra pure PFA reduces the number of unstable groups, further improving the stability and purity of PFA, and significantly reducing the concentration of metal ion precipitation in the product. It has a very wide range of applications in the semiconductor field. Ultra pure PFA can be used for manufacturing chip flower baskets, pipeline joints, pump valves, anti-corrosion liners, films, heat shrink sheaths, etc.
▶ PFA Global Production Capacity
According to the ACMI Fluoromaterials Research Institute, the global PFA production capacity is expected to be approximately 48500 tons by 2025. The overseas production capacity is mainly concentrated in Kemu with an annual output of about 11000 tons and Daikin (including domestic production capacity) with an annual output of about 10000 tons, mainly supplying the semiconductor field. Solvay, 3M (exiting the PFAS field), and others have a relatively low proportion in the high-end field. The domestic PFA production capacity is mainly concentrated in enterprises such as Juhua Group (10000 tons/year), Yonghe Group (3000 tons/year), Shandong Qifu New Materials (1500 tons/year), and Dongyue Future Materials (1000 tons/year).
However, the global semiconductor ultra pure PFA technology has long been monopolized by Kemu and Daikin, with extremely high barriers, but the breakthrough in localization has seen the dawn.
In September 2024, Shandong Qifu New Materials' 1500 tons/year ultra pure PFA project was completed and put into operation, with product purity reaching semiconductor level requirements (stable control of metal ion precipitation at ppb level).
In June 2025, the 10000 ton/year ultra pure PFA project of Juhua Corporation was completed and put into operation, and officially launched on the market in May 2026. The project successfully overcame the technical difficulties of high-purity PFA production, and the product purity reached the semiconductor level requirements. The key metal ion precipitation was stably controlled at the ppt (one trillionth) level, and the total metal ion precipitation was stably controlled at the ppb (one billionth) level. After testing and verification by semiconductor customers, the metal ion indicators of the product met the requirements of SEMI F57 standard.
In October 2025, Yonghe Group, relying on its Shaowu base in Fujian, added a 3000/year high-purity PFA production line to enter the trial production stage of its products, which have now been verified by leading wafer fabs.
▶ PFA Market Demand and Forecast
In the semiconductor process, due to the need to maintain the purity of the entire system, prevent external pollution, and improve product qualification rate, each step needs to be kept clean. The application of ultra pure PFA is beneficial for semiconductor manufacturing factories to establish a complete high-purity chemical transportation and distribution system, which is crucial for the development of the entire semiconductor industry.
With the continuous expansion of global wafer production capacity and the increasing popularity of 12 inch wafers and advanced processes, the demand for ultra pure PFA and purity per unit wafer has synchronously increased. Ultra pure PFA has become a necessary key material for high-end semiconductor production lines.
Based on market data, the global demand for ultra pure PFA is expected to be around 18000 tons by 2025, around 23000 tons by 2026, and around 40000 tons by 2030.
