Costron works with Lansheng to produce more sustainable raw materials with less carbon footprint
Coating industry
● Both parties reached an agreement on the production of key basic chemicals
● Costron uses electricity from hydropower generation with original production certificate for electrolysis in North Rhine-Westphalen
● This cooperation can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 120000 tons per year
The chemical companies Costron and Landsat cooperated in the production base in Lower Rhine, Germany, for the high energy consumption production of basic chemicals, making the products more climate-friendly. Lansheng purchased chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen from the ISCC PLUS certified production base of Costron in Leverkusen and Creffield - Udingen. From now on, about one third of the products supplied by Costron to Longsheng will use hydropower energy with guarantee of origin.
Dr. Klaus Sch ä fer, chief technology officer of Costron, said: "Covestro is seeking to fully use electricity from renewable resources in the production process, so as to achieve climate neutrality in terms of operation by 2035. A special focus is on the energy-intensive production of basic raw materials. We cooperate with Lucent to use energy proportionally in our electrolytic plant in North Rhine-Westphalia, which enables us to reduce the reported carbon dioxide emissions by up to 120000 tons per year."
The members of the management board of Langsheng Group said: "The joint project with Costron is an important basis for us to achieve the climate neutrality of the whole value chain. By purchasing raw materials with significantly less carbon footprint for the production of products, we can reduce the reported indirect emissions by up to 120000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent each year." Through the net zero value chain plan, This special chemical company plans to eliminate the emissions of Scope 3 in its upstream and downstream supply chain by 2050. This includes indirect emissions, especially from outsourced raw materials, and also emissions from logistics or waste disposal. For Scope 1 and 2 emissions, the company's goal is to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. Feng Hubo said: "Through this project, we are further achieving a climate-neutral product portfolio. At the same time, we are also providing support to customers who are increasingly seeking sustainable solutions."
Chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen are the basic materials of many products in the chemical industry, but their production is very energy-consuming. Lansheng uses raw materials provided by companies such as Costron to produce food and agricultural products.
Costron produces these three basic raw materials at its production bases in Leverkusen, Crayfield-Udingen and Dormagan, North Rhine-Westphalen. The production of chlorine, the strategic raw material of Leverkusen and Crefeld-Udingen production bases, has passed the internationally recognized ISCC PLUS standard certification, and Dormagan also plans to pass this certification in the near future. This certification can ensure that the electricity is correctly distributed to the product, and the verification of the certificate of origin of the Federal Environment Agency proves that the renewable energy is used.
