Application of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE)

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) is a new polymer material made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) resin by special processing methods such as stretching. It has many basic properties of PTFE, such as chemical inertness, low friction coefficient, wide temperature range, hydrophobicity, outdoor durability and biocompatibility. In addition, compared with general PTFE, it has the advantages of higher thermal stability, lower loss factor, better flexibility and lower dielectric constant.

A key characteristic of ePTFE is its porous structure. Water vapor and other gases can pass through these small holes, but most liquids, including liquid water, cannot penetrate. This is because the size of water droplets is 20000 times that of these small holes, and the size of water vapor molecules is one seventh of the size of these small holes. This is also why ePTFE film can be waterproof and breathable. Another significant advantage of ePTFE is that its tensile strength can reach tens of times that of PTFE. This is because the particle arrangement of PTFE is changed after tensile expansion, forming a more orderly complete crystal structure.

Because ePTFE has many advantages and can be processed into various shapes such as belts, membranes, tubes, fibers, plates, rods, etc., it has key applications in many industries. EPTFE is often used to produce dielectric materials for high-performance fabrics, medical implants, fibers, gaskets, seals, membranes and electronic products. This paper introduces the application of ePTFE in some key industries.

1. Industrial and process filtration

EPTFE film is an important part of industrial, automotive and process filtration systems. With the introduction of a number of environmental protection policies, regulations and standards, the emission of polluting dust and smoke will be subject to more and more strict supervision. These also make the demand for more efficient, effective and economical filter media more urgent. For example, because of the high cost of products, the emissions from the production process of fine chemicals must be close to zero. With the formulation of relevant policies and standards, higher requirements are put forward for the treatment of secondary pollution by waste incineration to achieve the goal of near zero emission.

Other important industries using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene filters include food, plastic processing, metallurgical plants, non-metallic mineral mining, recycling and pharmaceutical industries.

2. Medical and biological applications

EPTFE film is hydrophobic and hydrophobic, which is very suitable for medical applications. EPTFE can be used to manufacture various medical accessories, including wound care materials, masks, sensor protectors, ostomy bags, urine bags, drainage bags, medical equipment shells, exhaust caps, intravenous injection devices, needle vents, surgical smoke filters and suction filters.

Due to the nanofiber structure of ePTFE, it can be used for cell culture and provide a bionic environment for cell phenotype.

3. Fabric and fiber

EPTFE fiber has high strength, low shrinkage, good wear resistance, and excellent ultraviolet degradation resistance. These characteristics ensure the stability and integrity of ePTFE in extreme environments. EPTFE fiber can be woven, woven or sewn into various products. Such as: compression packaging, sewing thread, textile fiber, rope fiber, etc.

EPTFE film has been widely used in various clothing fabrics and industrial and architectural applications. Such as civil, sports, military and safety clothing fabrics, high-performance jackets, shoes, gloves, etc. Industrial fabrics made of ePTFE films are widely used in liquid and gas filtration, electrical insulation and ventilation windows.

In addition to the above applications, ePTFE is also widely used in many industries, including electronic and electrical, cable and its accessories, microfiltration, sealing, environment and exploration, pharmaceutical and biotechnology and other industries. With continuous exploration and development, ePTFE will have more and more applications in people's lives.
